I managed to find time to swing by the Royal Academy whilst in London this weekend to catch up with the Nicholas Hawksmoor exhibition. Rather than discussing the architecture itself, the exhibits explored the legacy of the buildings, and the art and architecture they went on to influence and inspire. Two of the most interesting pieces were in fact literary; Phillip Pullman describing his fascination with All Souls College Oxford and the effect it had on the formation of enchanted reality of the Dark Materials Trilogy, and a set of striking panels from Jack the Ripper graphic novel ‘From Hell’.

The exhibition runs until June 17th, with more information to be found at the above link, including a great google map of Hawksmoor’s surviving London buildings. Feeling thoroughly inspired I managed to follow the map as far as St.Mary Woolnoth, but alas it was closed!

Can anybody recommend any other Hawksmoor ‘must-see’s?
